Schleiden setzte die evolutionsbiologische Konzeption Darwins als einer der Ersten auch für die Anthropologie um und verstand die Kulturentwicklung des Menschen als Fortschreibung seiner biologischen Evolution. Vor 1850 las Schleiden seine Anthropologie nach J. Müller und J. F. Fries. Er begriff sie aber schon hier als Naturwissenschaft. Seine Rezeption des Darwinismus setzte insoweit in einer schon physiologisch bestimmten Anthropologie an. Hierin markiert Schleiden den Diskussionsstand seiner Zeit.
