***************
The second volume of the project ‘Gauss in German translation’ is now available. While the focus of first volume was Gauss as mathematician, here it is Gauss as astronomer. Carl Haase was the translator of Gauss’s Theoria motus, which first appeared in German in 1865. The new edition has an introduction, an improved table of contents, a bibliography of all works cited and an index of names and subjects. This edition offers full scholarly access to Gauss’s work for the first time, not only to the German translation but also to the Latin editions. Which models formed the basis for Gauss’s work, which tables he used in his astronomical calculations, what the role was of rigour and precision, etc.: these and other questions can now be more easily answered. This volume will be of interest above all to astronomers and historians of science.
