This volume presents examples of the potential of materials science applications for water reclamation. The solutions to common water remediation problems described in this book include resins with higher capacity and specificity, thermally-responsive resins, and even generating a commercially viable product out of the final flocculant, thus reshaping the water treatment industry into a product recovery business. Additionally, this book describes material and
material-engineering solutions to common problems encountered with water remediation by membranes, such as nano-structured and smart membranes, and membranes that resist fouling. A high-throughput method for improved membrane materials is included as well.

With this perspective, this volume demonstrates that recent innovations in material sciences provide tremendous potential to develop a novel generation of water treatment technologies. With further development, these innovations will lead the path to the future of the Water Industry and more globally, the Clean Technologies Sector.

Anja Mueller obtained her PhD from Washington University in St. Louis in polymer organic chemistry. In 1998, Mueller joined Professor David F. O'Brien's group to pursue postdoctoral research on the controlled drug release from liposomes by light-induced polymerization. She is currently employed as an associate professor at Central Michigan University. Her research interests are enzymatic synthesis, biomaterials, wastewater treatment, and fuel cell
membranes.
