THE FIELDS of equine medicine, surgery, and reproduction
have developed massively over the last 25 30
years and new knowledge and techniques for the diagnosis
and treatment of all sorts of conditions and diseases
continues to be added. This new knowledge is presented
initially in scientific papers and congresses around the
world and gradually is distilled down to appear in new
editions of textbooks. There continues to be published an
increasing number of equine-based textbooks, often
concentrating on one body system and written from a
specialist point of view. Very few have been produced in
the last 10 years that specifically address the needs of the
clinician who is not a full-time equine specialist or the
equine-interested undergraduate or postgraduate veterinary
student. This textbook is designed and written
with these colleagues very much in mind.
The breadth of content in this book is large, covering a
comprehensive range of topics in equine medicine,
surgery, and reproduction, and it is organized into
chapters using a systems-based approach. Each individual
system is introduced with precise information on the relevant
basic anatomy and physiology, standard clinical
examination techniques, and useful differential diagnostic
aids. The remainder of the chapter is split up into
diseases and disorders that are pertinent to that system.
The diseases and disorders are grouped together, either
anatomically or based on presenting clinical signs, into
sections where specific problems or diseases are presented
in a strict format that is common to the whole book. Thus
each disorder is presented under the individual headings
of definition/overview, etiology/pathophysiology, clinical
presentation, differential diagnosis, diagnosis, management,
and prognosis. These systems-based chapters are
complemented by additional chapters on specific areas
such as behaviorial problems and wounds. The focus is on
providing clinically relevant information that is required
for good case management, but with enough concise information
about etiology and pathophysiology to enable
readers to understand the conditions and the rationale for
diagnostic and treatment options. Some conditions that
produce multisystem manifestations may be discussed in
more than one chapter, with each chapter providing a different
emphasis, thereby ensuring a complete overall
content, but with less duplication.
The scope of equine veterinary medicine makes it
impossible for any one book to act as the sole resource for
all areas. With this in mind and considering the target readership
of this book, complicated or advanced diagnostic
and treatment techniques are mentioned, but not covered
in detail; however, further reading lists are provided to
guide the reader to additional information. These include
material such as reviews deemed to be of particularly high
quality by chapter authors, as well as selected primary scientific
reports and websites.
Patterns of disease can be highly variable between different
geographic regions, and while no book can provide
a comprehensive overview of all geographical differences,
the editors and authors have endeavored to make the
chapters in this book useful and relevant to a broad international
audience. It is hoped that in the future this aim
will be enhanced by the translation of the text into several
of the major languages of the world.
A unique feature of this book is the inclusion of a large
number of images, including color photographs, radiographic
and ultrasound images, and diagrams. Images are
provided for the majority of topics and are intended to
complement the text on the basis that a picture speaks a
thousand words . The inclusion of clinical images can be
useful in further understanding the pathogenesis and
pathophysiology of certain conditions, helping the pattern
recognition of some diseases and disorders, and visualizing
the surgical pathology or procedure
