My Husband's Journey with PSP (Progressive Supranuclear Palsy) and how we cared for him at home.

A learning experience for all of us who cared for him. I told him from the start he was not going to a Nursing Home.

The phases he went through, walking, talking, eye movements, going for rides to different towns, going up north to our cottage, going to the Casino, going to different restaurants, just being with family and friends. He loved to play Froggy with the dice and going for a golf cart ride on our property. We took him everywhere . He was happy.

In 2004 I would call on Mary to leave me signs when Bob was first ill to help me through this. The very first sign was when Bob and I drove up at the East side of Meijers Parking lot and we couldn't believe the beautiful golden arch in the parking lot. It was huge. There was also a bright golden light going right down the middle of this arch and there was a cross with Jesus on it. ( anyway it looked like it). To me this was a miracle . I took this picture around 8:30 A.M. I think in December.

I always wondered why this scene wasn't put in the paper. I have never seen anything like this before. I have about 7 different pictures of this. No one was parked or out of their cars looking at this fantastic rainbow with the bright golden light going down the middle and it looked like a cross at the bottom when I saw it in person.

This is a true story of Bob Russell and how using chemicals to spray your lawns and trees and accidentally drinking insecticide spray can cause his Neurological Disease, "Progressive Supranuclear Palsy" or PSP. It is a disease of the brain. Bob and I met at Jackson High School and when he first saw me walking down the hall, he told his friends , Charlie and George, "see that girl there? I am going to marry her". I was 15 and Bob was 17 when we married. I was pregnant with Kathie. Five years later we had 3 boys in succession. Bob wanted to live in the same neighborhood as his sister Rosie and Bob so about 5 houses down from them they built a garage for us to live in. It was around 1955. We lived on stone floors and no walls. I had to put curtains up around the bedroom and bathroom . You could see your feet when you sat on the toilet . We had a space heater in the middle of the room to keep us warm. We were so happy. I have always had a piano but we didn't have room for it so I just put it right in front of our bed. I never stopped playing. The neighbors used to complain because we were living in a garage. The house was lower than the road so one time it rained so hard all night and when we got up in the morning I stepped into 3 inches of water. We got dressed the best we could and Bob put me on his back and he took me out to the car. Later in the day I called the Citizen Patriot and they came out and took a picture of me dipping a can into the water and throwing it outside. I was on the front page .

Around 1960 we built on to our house and put it up on a basement. It was huge and overlooked out pool that Bob built. Bob and his brother-in-law Bob, built it.

In 1967 our mother died so my sister came to live with us as she was only 14 and we raised her with our kids.

Bob worked for miller Industries washing windows then he get a job at C.E. Hamlin's and from there he worked at Smith and Winchester's. He worked there a few years and they were going to go out of business. A firm from Chicago came to liquidate it and they asked Bob to help in the liquidation. He accepted and in that year he made $3,000. I put every penny in the bank and wouldn't touch it. Bob met John that had started a business and asked Bob if he would be his partner. Bob came to me and said we could go into business but would have to use the $3,000. I said yes do it. I always wanted us to own our own business. A few years later John asked Bob if he would buy him out, he wanted to go into something else. Bob bought him out and kept the name "Power Transmission Co.". It is a beautiful building. Bob and I were so proud to own our own business. Bob was a hard worker and leader in his business. ( It is still going today). Later on in years we built our new home where it is now. We have 130 acres and Bob had a 11 acre lake dug out.

Bob and I used to vacation in Nassau with our family. I laid in the sun one day too long and got burnt bad. He took me to the Hospital and they gave me some medicine. The next day my heart was acting up and I couldn't stay awake. Bob called the Hotel Doctor where we were staying and he checked me over and took the pills away from me. I was fine in a few days. When we got home I told Bob we needed our own Sun Tan Parlor . It didn't take him long to start one either. We named it the "Bronze Villa Tanning Salon? We ended up with 5 of them in Jackson. Bob was a brilliant man in starting businesses.

In March 2004 Bob bought this old house to renovate and then selling it. His friends helped him do this. Bob was walking down stairs and Jim was in front of him and Bob started to fall and Jim caught him. Another time he fell down the steps outside. Bob was adamant about putting bannisters on the stairs too. He started falling and tripping, having trouble picking his feet up. He started losing his balance too. One day he and Jim went to Menard's with the trailer on the back and a car was coming and he pulled out in front of him and dumped the load. Another time he was driving up the driveway on Plymouth St. with the trailer on the back and scraped the fenders all the way up the hill. Not like Bob, and Jim was noticing things wrong with him too. A few months later he was going to get our mail and hit all the mail boxes and knocked ours down. Now the family was seeing things and was also wondering what was wrong. We were going to a Hockey game and Bob started to run down the steps when the game was over and had to be helped down the rest of the way.

Bob would complain about his foot being weak and he would trip a lot. He started to shuffle his foot more and sometimes go into a run. He did this going down our little hill to the pool house and he had 2 pails of water in his hands and couldn't stop running until he fell.

We had golf carts so you could drive all over here. One time the kids were all swimming in the pool and he jumped into the golf cart and he drove down to the pool at a fast speed and couldn't put his foot on the brake, like he was frozen. I started screaming as Lisa was holding her baby on the steps of the pool and Bob was aiming for the pool. He missed her about 6 inches. That was the last time he drove the golf cart.

While driving up north one time to our cottage he aimed for the bridge frozen at the wheel. I grabbed the wheel and turned it away just in time. I told him to pull over to the side of the road and that was the last time he drove. He said his brain wouldn't let him move his arms, he said he felt paralyzed. He also had to stop driving his tractor which he dearly loved.

When you read my story please remember this disease changed his thinking, he couldn't help it but we still loved him and understood. People may think I shouldn't tell this but I have to tell the truth. I am not going to cover up this story about his illness.

Around 2004 Bob changed in his attitude and was getting mean.

1.      I said to Carol that there were about 30 black turkeys in our back yard. Bob said real mean, there was only 20, get your story straight.

2.      I said the paper is getting narrow and jokingly I said to Mike, "They must be going out of business". Bob said, " Why in the hell would you say something like that "really mean"

3.      When he gets real mad at anyone he beats on the table or counter.

4.      Bob got in an argument at work, Bob came home and beat on the counter bad.

5.      I called the shop and asked real nice if he got the generators yet and he blew up at me.

6.      He called Mike and asked where I was and to call if he finds me. Mike called him back and Bob said "Quit F------bothering me and hung up on him.

7.      When I am talking to other people and say one thing wrong with the story he would say,"That's not how it happened real mean".

8.      He threw Kassidy in the pool at 5 years old when the whole family was down there. She couldn't even swim. She was terrified. They had to dive in to get her.

9.      One day Kelly, Mike and I were in the kitchen and I didn't answer his question right and he started pounding on the counter like he was nuts.

10.     Bob walked out of his bedroom and slammed the door, Kathie said." Dad, be quiet, Jared is sleeping." He said in front of everyone. "I'll shut any f-------- door in my house if I want to. F------ you."

I took Bob back to Dr. Wald and told him things were changing in him. Dr. Wald looked into his eyes and noticed he stared a lot more and could not look down. Something was different when he walked too. He diagnosed Bob as having Parkinsonism.

This disease was changing Bob's brain. This wasn't the Bob I knew. I knew I would have to be careful and not get him angry.

On one of our visits to Dr. Wald he recommended that Bob be admitted to the Chelsea Hospital for Physical Therapy. They have a wing for patients like Bob where they can stay up to 2 weeks. They worked on him every day to strengthen his muscles and help him with his balance. It really...
