This volume contains an English translation of the Arabic translation and commentary on the book of Proverbs composed by one of the most acclaimed, innovative, and prolific exegetes of the Karaite “Golden Age” (10th –11th centuries), Yefet ben 'Eli ha-Levi. A critical edition and an extensive introduction was published by Ilana Sasson as vol. 1 (KTS 8) in 2016. Dr. Sasson worked for many years on an English translation of the work and, before her untimely death in 2017, passed her unfinished manuscript to the series editors. The translation was then completed, edited, and prepared for publication by Dr. Wechsler. Yefet’s commentary on Proverbs is a masterpiece of literary and rational-contextual analysis of one of the most difficult and important books of wisdom in the Hebrew Bible. His work is an invaluable link in the history of interpretation of the book of Proverbs.

Ilana Sasson (1954–2017), Ph.D. (2010), The Jewish Theological Seminary, and post-doctoral research fellow at Tel-Aviv University (2012–2014), taught religion and Hebrew Bible at Sacred Heart University, CT. She contributed several encyclopedic entries to the Textual History of the Bible (Brill 2015), and to the Encyclopedia of the Bible and Its Reception (De Gruyter), and published leading articles on Karaite hermeneutics, masorah, theology and gender.

Michael G. Wechsler, Ph.D. (2006), University of Chicago, is Professor of Bible at Moody Bible Institute, Chicago. He is co-editor of Brill’s Karaite Texts and Studies series and, in addition to many articles, has published several books dealing with Jewish Bible translation and exegesis, including, most recently, The Book of Conviviality in Exile (Kitab al-inas bi-'l-jalwa): The Judaeo-Arabic Translation and Commentary of Saadia Gaon on the Book of Esther (Brill, 2015).
