The present work is intended to introduce a novel approach to describe the transport phenomena in structured packings using a more rigorous and physically consistent method than the traditional one. In this hydrodynamic analogy approach, visual observations of the flow patterns arising in structured packings are taken to resolve the actual flow structure into geometrically simpler flow elements. The dominating elements are than selected to build a physical model. Eventually, the relevant transport phenomena are described on a theoretical basis, using the differential equations of fluid dynamics, heat and mass transfer. The use of empirical transport coefficients is thus avoided. The thesis gives a comprehensive description of the suggested modelling approach, beginning with a detailed analysis of the flow patterns in structured packings and ending with the algorithms to solve the developed mathematical model. A special attention is given to a verification of the suggested model using experimental data and to a comparison against the traditional model.
