This book describes different aspects of ash formation and ash properties in fluidized bed coal combustion. Outlined are the relations between coal type, coal preparation, operating parameters of the fluidized bed combustor and the steady-state ash size distribution. General aspects of bed inventory properties are discussed. The ash formation characteristics of high ash coals are analyzed and explained on the basis of several CFB-power plants located in China. Experiments with the respective boiler coals were carried out in a laboratory scale fluidized bed and a muffle furnace and by further employing image analysis techniques and statistical measures to understand coal mineral matter transformation. A procedure to determine the particulate properties of the coal combustion residues by experiments and by a modelling approach is outlined. The ash formation model is finally employed as part of an overall simulation code for CFB-performance prediction.
