This book provides a comprehensive examination of the technological, economic, and organizational forces that have shaped the evolution of telecommunications networks toward the Internet era. It traces the historical progression from circuit-switched systems to packet-based architectures, analyzing the trade-offs, standards negotiations, and global interoperability challenges that influenced design decisions. By exploring the interplay between innovation, investment constraints, and international policy, the book offers critical insights into how past choices impact current network capabilities and future directions, including emerging paradigms such as AI-driven optimization and quantum networking.

Introduction.- Why this book.- What originally motivated digital switching and transmission.- Early realizations – synchronous time switching.- Meanwhile, the Arpanet and beyond.- How do you make packets support multiservices?.- The emerging usage of the early internet.- IP, a choice of necessity?.- What now shapes today’s search for something better?.- Conclusion.

John Leonard Adams holds a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the University of Leicester, UKHe also earned a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Mathematics from the same institution, specializing in integral equations. He then joined Post Office Telecommunications in the UK, which later became British Telecommunications plc (BT). He began his career in the teletraffic research and development department, analyzing end-to-end probabilities of call attempt failures. Later, he transitioned to digital switch development, where he led the supervision and testing of digital edge switches contracted to Standard Telephone and Cable (STC Ltd). His responsibilities included writing comprehensive test schedules across multiple subsystem functions. Returning to teletraffic, he conducted simulation studies on the emerging Cambridge Ring Local Area Network, which led to his patent for the Orwell Slotted Ring—a technology designed to provide latency control for real-time services such as voice and video. Moving beyond teletraffic, he went on to secure multiple patents for BT in network engineering for broadband services. Adams represented BT internationally in standards negotiations for Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM), a technology widely regarded at the time as the foundation for advanced multiservice networks. In his final role at BT, he served as a consultant to the BT Wholesale CTO, focusing on future network requirements and the transition to broadband services. He later became Chief Technology Officer (CTO) of Razoom Inc., where he led efforts to develop locally controlled guaranteed bit rate services with less stringent IP requirements.
