1. Why did you choose this topic?
It grew from awareness of the rising prominence of provenance in debates on colonial collections, and of the limits posed by gaps and voids in documentation on which conventional methods rely. It also emerged from our engagement with art’s capacity for illumination and reflection in contexts of difficult heritage. Artistic Provenance Research offered a way to use art’s affordances to enhance and critically reflect on provenance research itself.
2. What new perspectives does your book offer?
The book introduces and unfolds Artistic Provenance Research (APR) as an artistic practice embedded in research that expands provenance beyond linear ownership chains to include affect, critical fabulation, oral histories, and community collaboration. Through international case studies across various media, including Tal’s own research on a human skull of unknown provenance, we sought to give readers in-depth and multi-faceted ways through which to see various dimensions involved in APR.
3. What makes your topic relevant for current research debates?
Amid intensified calls for restitution and decolonization, APR offers expanded ways to address archival gaps and contested ownership histories. It can mobilize artistic processes to work productively with absences, broaden evidentiary frameworks, redistribute authority, and support community-centred approaches. APR offers not only approaches for conducting research but also for practice, engaging wider publics and institutions in debates on colonial, NS, and other relevant contexts.
4. Choose one person you would like to discuss your book with!
We would rather like to discuss the book with whoever’s skull ID8470 is! Though Tal already kind of did that as you can learn if you read the book.
5. Your book summary in one sentence:
Artistic Provenance Research reimagines provenance as a creative, aesthetic, proactive, critical, and participatory practice.
