The contributions collected in this volume share a common focus on Augustine’s De civitate Dei and its early medieval legacy, addressing a wide range of topics within this extended field of research. The volume is intended as a stimulus for a multidisciplinary approach (philological, literary, theological, and philosophical) to Augustine's magnum opus and its early reception.
The structure of the volume is tripartite: Content and Themes, Manuscript Sources, and Afterlife. Each part explores the layered and dynamic complexity of De civitate Dei in its own right - be it the theological and literary architecture of the text, the arduous process of transmission, or its wide-ranging and at times ambivalent reception.

Über Autor(innen)

Marina Giani is professor of Medieval Latin at the University of Milan; Anthony Dupont and Gert Partoens are professors of, respectively, Christian antiquity and Latin literature at KU Leuven’. They collaborated within the framework of the interdisciplinary project funded by the KU Leuven Research Council. This project examined the political dimensions, transmission history, and reception of De ciuitate Dei, and among its outcomes is this volume.
