This book presents a state-of-the-art overview on the terrestrial malacofauna of Türkiye. It compiles the knowledge on Turkish landsnails accumulated by a multifold of scientists since Linnaeus as per end 2023. It covers 734 taxa at (sub)species level, distributed over 188 genera belonging to 43 families. 65 % of the terrestrial snails are endemic to the country. Over 2,600 colour photos illustrate all shelled gastropods, many of them are represented by their type specimens. Anatomical drawings of all slug species are incorporated in the text. In addition, 121 highly detailed distribution maps based on 3,300 localities are supplied. The reference list contains more than 2,700 entries, not only on Türkiye but covers large parts of the Near and Middle East. The book aims to serve as a basis for identifying Türkiye's terrestrial malacodiversity, recognizing structural changes and taking appropriate measures for nature and habitat conservation.

Weitere Infos & Material

Bank, Ruud A.
Ruud Bank is professor emeritus at the University Medical Center Groningen, studying fundamental aspects of the extracellular matrix in health and disease. As a citizen scientist he works on the continental malacofauna of the Western Palaearctic. Starting as a child with collecting shells on the beach, he came under the spell of land- and freshwater molluscs at the age of 15.

Neubert, Eike
Eike Neubert is curator emeritus for molluscs at the Natural History Museum of Bern. Since his childhood he is familiar with Türkiye, and during his scientific career, he always was fascinated of the richness and beauty of the molluscs living in the Near and Middle East, Arabia, and nearby countries. This book is the result of almost 40 years of research.

Bochud, Estée
Estée Bochud studied Ecology and Evolution at the University of Bern. With an eye for aesthetics and a hand for data, she created all distribution maps and most species photos. At the Natural History Museum of Bern, she is mainly in charge of the mollusc collection and supports the resulting scientific work.

Menkhorst, Henk P. M. G.
Henk Menkhorst is a retired lecturer from a Dutch Teachers Training College. After completion of the grammar school, he studied plant pathology and entomology at the Wageningen University. He is a noted collector and malacologist in marine and terrestrial European species. He made seven visits to Türkiye, most of them in the northeast and southeast of this wonderful country.
