The articles in this anthology explore the concept of ethnicity in Latin America using interdisciplinary approaches. The foci are on the history of the concept – the meanings that became attached to it in different societies since the nineteenth century – as well as on recent processes of ethnic mobilization, as, for example, the ethnicization of political arenas and the instrumentalization of ethnicity in identity politics, particularly since the 1990s. This last period is special in so far as indigenous people and Afrodescendants organize themselves on a more global level acquiring rights and modifying societies as well as the existing political frameworks.
