This bestselling book shows content area teachers in middle and high schools how to boost student achievement by including lessons and strategies that focus on students' reading comprehension without detracting from content-area focus. These lessons and strategies are research-based and address the specific literacy challenges of each subject-area (social studies, mathematics, and science).

The fully updated new edition includes information on the Science of Reading and teaching reading skills explicitly and systematically using evidence-based methods. There is also a section on academic vocabulary, to help meet the demand for sophisticated reading skills on standardized tests. Finally, the new edition offers strategies for meeting the academic needs of English Language Learners (ELLs). Throughout the book, there are classroom vignettes to show what high-impact lessons look like, as well as templates, graphic organizers, and discussion guides.

With the practical tools and examples in this book, you’ll be able to help students improve their reading skills in the content areas so they can get the most out of their academic learning.
