The original Arabic text of Maimonides’ major medical work, his Medical Aphorisms, has recently been critically edited and translated into English by Gerrit Bos (2004–17). The editor now offers a critical edition of the medieval Hebrew translation by R. Zerahyah ben Isaac ben She'altiel Hen, who was active as a translator in Rome in the years 1277–91, where he—apart from Maimonides’ medical works—also translated medical works by Galen and Ibn Sina, and also philosophical works by Aristotle and Averroes.

Zerahyah’s unique translation, which adheres closely to Maimonides’ Arabic text and also uses many Italian and Latin loanwords, has not been edited so far, unlike the only other known medieval Hebrew translation by Nathan ha-Me'ati.

Gerrit Bos (Ph.D. 1989) is Professor Emeritus of Jewish Studies at the University of Cologne, Germany. He has widely published in the fields of Jewish studies, Islamic studies, and medieval science and medicine in Arabic and Hebrew texts.
