The aim of the book is to present an overview of the recent advances in Functional Data Analysis (FDA). The authors adopt a practical approach, presenting the fundamental techniques and models necessary to analyze functional data in a self-contained text. The text is therefore accessible to a wide audience ranging from professional statisticians to postgraduate students, including those with no background knowledge in the area.
The text is split into seven logically ordered sections beginning with an Introduction, discussing the vital role of FDA in modern science, and detailing the scope of the book. The six subsequent sections each focus on one main concept, beginning with functional data, then progressing to explore various techniques of analysis and different types of models. Each section is structured in a consistent style, beginning with a chapter of examples to introduce the concept, before going on to discuss definitions, results and applications in more detail. The text is concluded by a section of appendices.
The focus on linear modeling (rather than attempting to cover the whole range of types of FDA), allows the authors to fully develop the material, and enables many types of data and models to be explored. The combination of such an accessible style with the use of numerous simulations and case studies from a wide range of disciplines makes the text an invaluable guide to a wide audience.
