This open access book explores tiny and high-frequency vibrations called terahertz phonons, which happen in solids and fluids due to small mechanical changes. It shows how these vibrations can trigger nuclear reactions in chemical elements like iron and calcium, releasing neutrons and alpha particles. These discoveries help explain old mysteries like carbon pollution in early Earth, how oceans formed, cold fusion, and correct carbon dating. The book also discusses how this knowledge could be used in predicting earthquakes, spotting early signs of material fatigue, understanding geochemical evolution and climate change, and creating new energy sources.

Professor Alberto Carpinteri received his Doctoral Degrees in Nuclear Engineering cum Laude (1976) and in Mathematics cum Laude (1981) from the University of Bologna in Italy. After two years at the Consiglio Nazionale delle Ricerche working in the Nuclear Power Plant Programme, he was appointed Assistant Professor at the University of Bologna in 1980. He moved to  Politecnico di Torino in 1986 as Full Professor and became Chair Professor of Solid and Structural Mechanics, as well as the  Director of the Fracture Mechanics Laboratory. During that period, he held different positions of responsibility, among which are Head of the Department of Structural Engineering  and Founding Director of the Doctoral School in Structural Engineering .

Prof. Carpinteri was Visiting Scientist at Lehigh University, Pennsylvania, USA (1982-1983). He was appointed as Fellow of several academies and professional institutions, and Head of the Engineering Division in the European Academy of Sciences in Brussels. He was the President of the major International Scientific Societies on Fracture Mechanics (ICF, ESIS, IA-FraMCoS) and was the winner of relevant awards, among which the Giuliano Preparata Medal from the International Society for Condensed Matter Nuclear Science (2022).

Presently, Prof. Carpinteri is Chang Jiang Chair Professor at Shantou University, Guest Professor at Harbin Institute of Technology, and Honorary Professor at Tianjin University and Shenyang Northeastern University in China.
