for SATB and soloists (M-S, T, and B), with organ and flute or small ensemble
Following the successful St John Passion, Chilcott takes on another landmark of the choral tradition. Words from the Gospels of St Matthew and St Luke are intertwined with some of the finest poetry from the sixteenth to the nineteenth centuries to create a compelling retelling of the Christmas story. Four well-known hymns are set to original melodies that take their place among the season's tradition of great hymnody and enable the audience or congregation to join in with the choir.
Much of the narrative is presented by a tenor soloist in the role of Evangelist, with focal points such as the Magnificat and Nunc dimittis and a gentle setting of Christina Rossetti's 'Love came down at Christmas' taken by mezzo-soprano and bass soloists. The chorus is integral to the storytelling, assuming
small character roles, enriching the Evangelist's narrative, and taking centre stage in two poignant unaccompanied movements.
