Creating Visual Narratives is a holistic guide to visual storytelling, that helps readers define their creative intent through photography.

The book draws on the decades of combined experience of authors Mike Davis and Andrea Wise across newsrooms, nonprofits, government, higher education, and the tech sector. It is organized into three parts and structured to anchor a semester-long course, guiding readers through mastering the craft of making, selecting, and sequencing images within ethical frameworks, and charting a sustainable visual career path. Throughout, thirty-three photographers share the stories behind their most meaningful images and their own career journeys, grounding each concept in real-world experience. Appendices provide teaching strategies, field-tested assignments, and a visual vocabulary to extend the book's use in and beyond the classroom.

Ideal for students, educators, and working professionals at every career stage, this book is suited to photography and visual communication courses as well as independent study.

Online support materials include a resource guide, further reading list, syllabi for educators, and a sample of LinkedIn headlines showing a wide range of roles and ways of positioning yourself as a visual professional. Mike Davis has been helping photographers develop compelling visual narratives for several decades. He’s a Syracuse University Professor Emeritus, where he created and taught visual storytelling classes and directed The Alexia Grants. Work that students in his courses produced was widely recognized every year. Through a career as a visual leader he worked at National Geographic, The White House, five daily newspapers and as an independent visual editor, working with hundreds of photographers to develop projects and advance their skills. His and their work was widely recognized in many major competitions, grants, exhibitions, and festivals. He has edited more than 50 photo books.

Andrea Wise is a photo editor and creative producer with more than 15 years of experience across journalism, nonprofits, and tech, including National Geographic, Newsweek, ProPublica, and Meta. She was one of three core editors on ProPublica’s Pulitzer Prize-winning investigation into abortion bans, for which she commissioned and edited the photo essay “The Year After a Denied Abortion,” winner of the RFK Book and Journalism Awards Grand Prize, among other honors. Andrea has juried Pictures of the Year, American Photography, and the Overseas Press Club Photo Awards. She also co-founded and grew Diversify Photo from an idea into a 501(c)(3) nonprofit and global community of more than 2,000 underrepresented visual creatives.
