[Sign of Identity
500 Years of Reformation Medals]
The appearance of the first Luther medals over 500 years ago around 1521 is the basis for a broad overview of the origins, development, iconography and function of Reformation medals. Even the early medals depict Reformation ideas in portraying the „light“ of the Reformation against the „papal darkness“. In the secular celebrations starting in 1617, the minted medallions become visible signs of the developing and changing confessional identities of the Protestant churches. Through coins and medals as a means of confessional polemics and propaganda, the volume of essays traces a line from the 16th century up to the diverse manifestations of territorial commemoration of the Reformation. It concludes with iconographic observations up to World War I and contemporary artistic medals of the 21st century. The contributions go far beyond the conventional descriptive numismatic method and address the political, ecclesiastical, and social contexts. They were written by renowned experts in church history, regional and municipal history, literary history, and music and art history.
