This second edition textbook offers a concise and coherent introduction to accelerator physics and technology, connecting fundamental principles with advanced applications such as high-energy colliders and state-of-the-art light sources, including Compton sources, storage rings, and free-electron lasers. Targeted at both undergraduate and graduate students, it also appeals to Ph.D. students and senior scientists embarking on a journey into beam physics and accelerator design.

The book introduces readers to particle accelerators through a logical and sequential narrative, emphasizing the physical significance of each topic. Key concepts covered include electromagnetism, Special Relativity, and the historical evolution of accelerators. Readers will gain insights into radiofrequency accelerating structures, single particle dynamics, synchrotron radiation, and the complexities of light sources and colliders. The text is self-consistent, incorporating basics of Special Relativity and Statistical Mechanics, and offers rigorous mathematical derivations with straightforward demonstrations where possible.

The understanding gained from this systematic study equips students to deepen their knowledge through an extensive and up-to-date bibliography. The book presents both theoretical and experimental perspectives, referencing the latest advancements in colliders and light sources. The author, with nearly 25 years of experience in accelerator design and operation, and two decades of teaching experience, provides expert insights into the field.

This book is an invaluable resource for students and researchers in accelerator physics, offering a comprehensive foundation for further specialization. It is also a crucial addition to the libraries of institutions focused on engineering and physics, providing a detailed guide to modern particle accelerators. Whether you are a student, researcher, or seasoned scientist, this book offers the tools and insights needed to navigate the complex world of particle accelerators.

Simone Di Mitri is a senior staff scientist in particle accelerator physics at Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste and adjunt professor at the University of Trieste, Department of Physics, Italy. He has extensive research experience in particle beam physics, with an accent on beam collective effects and manipulation of electron beams, and production of short wavelength radiation at storage ring light sources and free-electron lasers. He has contributed to the design study of several coherent and incoherent light sources, he participated to the commissioning of the Daphne collider, the Elettra synchrotron light source, and the FERMI free-electron laser in Italy. He is serving extensively on international advisory committees and scientific program committees of particle accelerator and light source conferences. He has co-authored more than 90 peer-reviewed publications and trained many undergraduates and graduates in accelerator physics.
