This book introduces Maxwell's equations as early as possible to promote greater understanding of the unity of electromagnetism. This book, which won plaudits when it was first published for its innovative approach, is now available in an updated and improved second edition. The driving force behind this text is the need for a modern presentation of the unity of electromagnetism based on the premise that electromagnetism is Maxwell's field equations in the same way as Newton's Laws of motion are classical mechanics. Thus, instead of the usual historical development of the subject, this book introduces the student to Maxwell's field equations at the earliest opportunity in order that they serve as a basis for everything that follows. Familiarity with the basic facts and laws of electricity and magnetism is assumed, with a brief review given in the text. Each chapter contains numerous worked and unworked problems which assist the reader in assessing their understanding of the theory. In this second edition, several sections have been extensively revised to allow for clearer presentation, and the text is enhanced with all new illustrations.

After David Dugdale completed his graduation from the University of Manchester he worked in the UK Atomic Energy Authority on the Advanced Gas Cooled reactor programme. Later, as a researcher at the central research laboratories of the General Electric Company, he worked in quantum electronics, gaining experience of masers and lasers and also the techniques of magnetic resonance and low temperature physics. After a postgraduate degree from the University of Durham, he was a senior lecturer at the University of Keele. His main research interest has been experimental work on magnetic resonance in general and the mechanisms of spin-lattice relaxation in particular. Some publications have been more theoretical in nature, extending from magnetic resonance through quantum theory to general relativity.
