Generative and agentic artificial intelligence (AI) are changing the very nature of the technologies that information systems (IS) research seeks to explain. Rather than waiting to be adopted, these systems draft, recommend, decide and, increasingly, act on people’s behalf. Within a single afternoon, the same person may use an AI tool, collaborate with it, supervise it and have it act on their behalf, yet most established IS theories were written with only usage in mind. Returning to the project begun in 2012 with the first two volumes of Information Systems Theory: Explaining and Predicting Our Digital Society, Volume 4 and its companion, Volume 3, ask what it means to use, extend, rethink, and, where necessary, create IS theory to capture the new disruptive reality of AI.
The book’s 27 chapters, written by an international group of scholars and reviewed through a double-blind process, follow a common structure. Each introduces a theory, model or framework, explains its origins and core logic, and critically examines how information systems (IS) researchers have used it. Each then proposes an extension or modification and considers how AI challenges its underlying assumptions. The volume moves from systems and organizations to individuals and teams, then to platforms, markets and society. It revisits work system theory, the TOE framework, agency theory, dynamic capabilities, UTAUT2, expectation confirmation, the elaboration likelihood model, privacy calculus, transactive memory, network externalities, signaling theory and activity theory. Taken together, the chapters reveal how AI reshapes the distribution of agency, knowledge, time, control and value. They also examine the risks associated with these shifts, including automation bias, drift, lock-in and diluted accountability. Featuring seven forewords by leading IS scholars, the book is an essential resource for doctoral students, researchers and practitioners seeking to choose, apply and develop theory for a digital society increasingly shaped by AI.
