The eighth century has long been regarded in historical and archaeological scholarship as a watershed between Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Defining the character of the transformations that mark this period remains a central challenge, particularly with regard to continuity and change in the economic structures of the Late Antique Mediterranean world. The contributions assembled in this volume originate from an international and interdisciplinary conference that brought together scholars of Late Antique, Islamic, Byzantine, and Medieval history, as well as Archaeology, Numismatics, Philology, and Papyrology. By approaching the eighth century as a crucial threshold from multiple perspectives and by combining archaeological evidence with literary and documentary sources, the volume re-examines the dynamics of continuity and disruption that shaped this phase of Mediterranean history, with particular attention to regional differentiation, material culture, monetary circulation, and documentary practice in order to refine existing models of transformation and to situate local developments within wider Mediterranean frameworks.
