Impacts on Natural Hazards

This book provides a comprehensive exploration of the temporal and spatial dynamics of water resources and their implications for natural hazards. There is an urgent need to understand the variability and distribution of water resources over different time scales and geographical areas, which is crucial for reducing the vulnerability of different regions. These fluctuations significantly affect ecosystems, agriculture, urban infrastructure, and overall water security. This book bridges the gap between hydrological science, climate variability, and risk assessment, providing a multidisciplinary perspective on the interactions between water systems and extreme events.

It covers key topics such as hydrological modelling, the impacts of climate change, the spatiotemporal variability of precipitation and river flow, and the role of remote sensing and geo-statistics in water resources management.

Designed for researchers, hydrologists, environmental scientists, and policymakers, this handbook serves as a valuable reference for understanding and mitigating the risks associated with water-related natural hazards while promoting sustainable water resources management strategies.

Saeid Eslamian received his PhD in Civil and Environmental Engineering from University of New South Wales, Australia in 1998. Saeid was a Visiting Professor in Princeton University and ETH Zurich in 2005 and 2008 respectively. He has contributed to more than 1K publications in journals, conferences, books. Eslamian has been appointed as 2-Percent Top Researcher by Stanford University for several years. Currently, he is a full professor of Hydrology and Water Resources and Director of Excellence Center in Risk Management and Natural Hazards, Isfahan University of Technology. His scientific interests are Floods, Droughts, Water Reuse, Climate Change Adaptation, Sustainability and Resilience.

Yaser Sabzevari has a strong academic background in hydrology and extensive experience in watershed modelling. He has spent the past several years conducting field-based and data-driven research on the interplay between the water resources and environmental hazards. His PhD work included the analysis of snowmelt dynamics, drought impacts, and flood modelling using tools such as Arc-SWAT and GIS-based approaches. He has published peer-reviewed articles in both national and international journals and has actively collaborated with regional water authorities and research institutions. These experiences have provided him with a comprehensive understanding of how spatial and temporal water variability affects the natural hazard risk, knowledge he aims to make accessible and actionable in this book.

Faezeh Eslamian is a PhD Holder of Bioresource Engineering in McGill University. Her research focuses on the development of a novel lime-based product to mitigate phosphorus loss from agricultural fields. Faezeh completed her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in civil and environmental engineering from Isfahan University of Technology, Iran where she evaluated natural and low-cost absorbents for the removal of pollutants such as textile dyes and heavy metals. Furthermore, she has conducted research in the worldwide water quality standards and wastewater reuse guidelines. Faezeh is an experienced multidisciplinary researcher with interest in soil and water quality, environmental remediation, water reuse and drought management.
