This book examines the role of stress-activated electrical processes in the Earth’s crust and their potential implications for Earth-system science. Departing from the conventional treatment of the solid Earth as an electrically inert medium, The Peroxy Paradox presents a physical framework in which common rock-forming minerals host dormant electronic structures that can become active under tectonic loading. The analysis focuses on peroxy defects in crystalline lattices and on the generation of highly mobile electronic charge carriers whose transport properties differ fundamentally from classical ionic conduction in geological materials.
Drawing on solid-state physics, geochemistry, and observational geophysics, the authors address longstanding objections related to charge screening and conductivity in wet crustal environments, and propose mechanisms by which large-scale electronic signals may arise prior to mechanical failure. The book also outlines experimental and observational approaches for investigating stress-related geoelectric phenomena, situating these processes within a broader context of lithospheric dynamics. Intended for researchers and advanced students in physics, geophysics, and Earth sciences, this volume offers a focused contribution to the study of electrical phenomena in the solid Earth.

Friedemann Freund is affiliated with the SETI Institute. His research spans solid-state physics, mineralogy, geochemistry, geophysics, and the physical and chemical processes associated with defects in crystalline materials. A major focus of his work has been the study of peroxy defects in minerals and rocks and the activation of highly mobile electronic positive-hole charge carriers under mechanical stress, which forms the scientific foundation of .

Dr. Freund received his PhD from the University of Marburg in 1959. Following postdoctoral research at Pennsylvania State University, he began his academic career in inorganic chemistry at the University of Göttingen and subsequently moved into the geosciences at the University of Cologne. His early research examined interactions between H2O, CO, CO2, and oxide materials, including minerals. This work led to collaborations with the Chemical Engineering Department at Stanford University and to research at the Van de Graaff Accelerator Facility at the University of Namur in Belgium and the Rutherford Laboratory in the United Kingdom, where he developed and refined analytical approaches for hydrogen and carbon in solids using low-energy nuclear reaction methods. He later extended this work using secondary ion mass spectrometry at Arizona State University.

In 1985, Dr. Freund joined NASA Ames Research Center as a Senior National Research Council Fellow, where his research initially addressed the abiogenic formation of complex organic molecules within structurally dense mineral matrices and its possible relevance to the origin of life. His subsequent research increasingly focused on peroxy defects, stress activation of electronic charge carriers in rocks, and the implications of these processes for geophysical and Earth-system phenomena. He has also held academic affiliations with San Jose State University and the Stanford Sleep Epidemiology Research Center. His long-term interdisciplinary work has connected solid-state physics, mineral chemistry, geophysics, and biological and environmental responses to electrical processes in the solid Earth.

Viktor Stolc is affiliated with the SETI Institute. His research spans functional genomics, transcriptomics, redox biology, genetics, nanotechnology, bioinformatics, and the effects of electromagnetic and environmental factors on biological systems. He has led and co-led multidisciplinary biotechnology and space-biology research programs involving large-scale genomic and transcriptomic analysis, high-performance computing, and the development of molecular and computational technologies.

His previous research included high-resolution transcriptome mapping of the human genome and model organisms, contributions to early large-scale functional genomics efforts, including the ENCODE project, and studies of genomic and transcriptomic responses to spaceflight and other environmental stresses. He has contributed to patented technologies in nanopore sequencing and multiplex DNA genotyping and has worked on the development and application of next-generation sequencing and computational approaches to biological research.

Dr. Stolc previously held research and academic appointments at NASA Ames Research Center, Stanford University School of Medicine, and Yale University. His broader scientific interests include biochemistry, genetics, genome science, redox regulation, biological rhythms, sleep, and electromagnetic effects on physiology. He also collaborates with researchers at the Slovak Academy of Sciences and serves as an Associate Editor of the journal .
