Il volume ha l’intento di presentare le informazioni di gromatica
militare dell’unico autore antico che ne ha trattato con sistematicità,
lo ps. Igino (sec. III), nel suo opuscolo sulla metatio, ovvero
distribuzione di un terreno fra i reparti di un esercito romano.
L’interesse che diversi studiosi hanno mostrato per l’opuscolo anche in
tempi assai recenti, fraintendendone purtroppo, come già in passato, qua
e là i messaggi, ha spinto Grillone ad offrire questa nuova edizione con
traduzione italiana a fronte, corredata di osservazioni linguistiche e
di chiarimenti, per consentire un’immediata comprensione di quanto era
stato travisato: posizione della groma nel rispetto della
simmetria; individuazione di destra e sinistra nella pianta del campo;
metodo di distribuzione dello spazio ai reparti; disposizione delle
coorti legionarie nella zona anteriore e di alcuni reparti nella zona
centrale; infine fortificazioni a quarto di cilindro (claviculae),
erette verso l’esterno in corrispondenza delle quattro porte e ognuna
accompagnata da una fossa (titulum).
Con la costituzione del testo e l’apparato, la traduzione, l’ampia
prefazione con chiarimenti su lingua, testo e messaggi, il commento, il
capitolo sulla storia del testo dalla prima edizione a questa attuale, e
la Tabula discrepantium con la sinossi delle proposte testuali
dei vari editori, il volume di Grillone restituisce al de metatione
castrorum il suo testo genuino, interpretato nel modo più aderente
possibile alle intenzioni del suo autore.
This book aims at presenting military gromatic information from the only
extent ancient author writing on those questions, ps. Hyginus (IIIth
A.C.) who wrote a work about metatio (land distribution to the
troops of the Roman army). Several scholars studied this book until very
recently, but generally misunderstood vital points. The present edition
an Italian translation mainly studies linguistic questions in order to
reassess the debated points: the groma’s dispositioning according to the
symmetry; the right and left side of a camp’s map; the distribution of
troops within the camp; the disposition of cohortes legionariae
in front and of some troops in the central part of the camp; finally the
fortifications in the form of a quarter of a cylinder (claviculae),
built out of the wall starting from the jamb of the four doors, and a
small excavation next each of them (titulum).
The present book studies the original text and meaning of the de
metatione castrorum by proposing a new restitution and a critical
apparatus, a translation, an exhaustive preface with explanations about
linguistic and textual problems, a commentary, a chapter about the
historical evolution of the text from the first edition to the present
one and by a Tabula discrepantium.
