Dysequilibrium and spells of vertigo may imply severe socio-professional consequences and often represent a traumatic experience resulting in psychological perturbations. These perturbations request early and adequate diagnosis and treatment. The XXXIIIrd Symposium of the International Society of Otoneurology held in Geneva in May 1999 was devoted to the most recent advances in the evaluation of equilibrium disorders, mainly of their physical and psychological consequences, conveniently called ‘vestibular handicap’. The dual aspect, somatic and psychological, of otoneurological disorders such as vertigo, dysequilibrium, and tinnitus is evaluated in joint medical-psychological consultations. In this novel approach, patients are seen simultaneously by two therapists, an otoneurologist and a psychologist, to better detect the psychological aspects of medical complaints and immediately treat all the aspects of otoneurological disorders. Focus is placed on the difficulties encountered by patients with Ménière’s disease or tinnitus, and the difficulties in establishing a scale to assess the impact of these disorders on the quality of life are addressed. Therefore this issue is of special interest to otoneurologists, neurologists, ENT specialists, as well as psychologists.
