The year 2026 marked the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of American Independence. During the military conflict associated with it, which lasted from 1775 to 1783, troops from Brunswick and other German auxiliary forces, along with Indigenous warriors, fought as allies on the British side from Canada. Numerous Indigenous objects that have survived in German collections still bear witness to this today.
The exhibition “Tomahawk and Drum – Indigenous Mementos from the Time of the American Revolution in Germany” was developed in dialog with descendants of some of the Indigenous communities that once participated in that war, granting a new perspective to these objects which are unique in a variety of ways.
