This is an introductory text that focuses on Construction 5.0 (C5.0) which represents the next stage in global construction advancement, and it presents an exciting vision for the future of construction characterised by high efficiency, health and safety, sustainability, and a human-centric focus, where technology complements human skills rather than replacing them. The book employs a simple structure starting with the historical development of C5.0, then the key features, challenges and future prospects for both developed and developing nations, and finally the ethical and training concerns which must be considered when implementing C5.0.

C5.0 will involve up-skilling and re-skilling of the construction workforce to work with new technologies, incorporate the human element into all construction processes, improve working conditions, and foster a culture of creativity and innovation. The book explores how C5.0

-  has the potential to accelerate the green and digital transition and contribute to a more resilient and sustainable society and economy

- prioritises humancentric design, enhances human-machine collaboration, demands safer and more inclusive construction workspaces, promotes a greener economy, and fuels societal transformation

- emphasises that people and the environment are significant and deserve protection and places both at the heart of all construction processes throughout all the construction project phases.

This helpful little book is an essential introduction to a topic that all construction stakeholders must pay attention to if they want to effect the change the industry desperately needs to tackle climate change, productivity and safety challenges whilst putting people first.

Theo C. Haupt is South African National Research Foundation-rated Adjunct-Professor in the Department of Construction Management, Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. He has been involved in construction practice and research for several years with a PhD from the United States focusing on alternative approaches to managing health and safety in construction. He has authored and edited several books and published over 200 research articles. He is involved in the International Council for Research and Innovation in Building and Construction (CIB) Working Commissions W99 (Safety, Health and Welfare in Construction) and W123 (People in Construction). He has served on the Advisory Council for Occupational Health and Safety of the South African Minister of Labour. He has worked on several research reports on the state of the construction industry in South Africa including Construction Health & Safety in South Africa Status & Recommendations. His construction industry experience spans more than two decades. He has written several books that include Introduction to Construction health and safety management, Applied Construction Health and Safety, and Management of Safety, Health and Environment in South Africa: A Handbook. More recently he has become interested in the impact of the exponentially rapid technological developments on human beings given that Industry 4.0 with its focus on technology has potentially ignored this aspect. Construction 5.0 derived from Industry 5.0 with its origins in Europe seeks to respond to this imbalance.

Progress S. Chigangacha is an early career researcher, who is a recipient of the South African National Research Fund Post-Doctoral Fellowship grant, hosted by the Department of Construction Management, Nelson Mandela University, Port Elizabeth, South Africa. Her passion lies in placing people at the heart of construction processes, emphasising a balanced approach that integrates human input while safeguarding health and well-being. She is dedicated to processes that support worker safety and well-being, rather than diminishing the role of people in construction. Her research focuses on integrating human-centric principles within technological advancements in construction. Following the successful award of a post-doctoral grant, her research centres on the transformative principles of C5.0, where technology is designed to enhance, not replace, human capabilities, fostering a safer, more inclusive, and sustainable construction environment.
