This open access book introduces movable antenna (MA) technology reconfigures wireless channels by physically repositioning radiating or receiving elements within prescribed local regions. This spatial control can enhance desired signals, reshape interference, and improve multiplexing without necessarily adding radio-frequency (RF) chains. Yet a favorable terminal geometry alone does not define a practical system: channel acquisition, movement and settling time, actuator energy, calibration, CSI aging, reliability, and fairness must also be reflected in the transmission protocol. This research monograph develops a scenario-driven framework for that joint design problem. It introduces MA concepts, feasible configurations, position-dependent channel models, performance metrics, and the physical benefits and limitations of antenna movement.
The three core architecture chapters turn this framework into executable protocols. Protocol I uses a two-timescale uplink design: statistical CSI selects a reusable antenna deployment, while local instantaneous CSI updates the receive combiner in each coherence block. Protocol II develops outage-aware downlink transmission when online instantaneous CSI is unavailable, jointly designing a fixed deployment, statistical zero-forcing processing, and transmission rates under explicit reliability targets. Protocol III studies fairness-enhanced successive stay-then-move switching, where complementary deployment patterns, their order, transition time, and dwell-time allocation are optimized over a finite service period. Across these chapters, the book derives receiver-dependent long-term objectives, projected position algorithms, correlated-ratio moment and outage-rate approximations, Lagrangian-dual pattern generation, spatial minorization, and finite-speed dwell allocation. Each numerical study reports common and figure-specific simulation parameters and interprets the resulting operating tradeoffs. A final chapter identifies five research directions: blind-zone-free sequential movable transmission, energy-efficient event-triggered repositioning, predictive receding-horizon control, hierarchical channel acquisition, and queue- and deadline-aware positioning. Intended for researchers, postgraduate students, and wireless-system engineers, the monograph emphasizes net service after channel acquisition, movement, settling, calibration, and CSI aging. Familiarity with digital communications, linear algebra, probability, and introductory optimization is assumed.
