‘Migration and Reconstructed Identities’ is an exploration of the complicated relationship between migration and identity within the interdisciplinary field of Cultural Studies. Structured at the intersection of three intertwined and more inclusive markers of identity, namely ethnicity, language, and space, the study offers a multifaceted analysis of how migration affects and effects the (re)construction of identity within the dynamic process of transculturation.
The corpus consists of memoirs by a number of contemporary Iranian American authors, in which they have recorded their narratives of the tumultuous recent history of their country along with their consequent experiences as immigrants. Relying on their real-life experiences in the United States coupled with their personal and intergenerational memories, Iranian American authors embark on a “hero’s journey” to (re)construct their trans-ethnic identity, claim transcultural spaces of belonging, and record their resilient narratives through their accented language.
