provides a comprehensive engineering treatment of shape memory alloys (SMAs), connecting the fundamental science of these remarkable materials with practical methods for processing, characterization, modeling, and structural design. Spanning ten chapters, the book progresses from the history, material mechanisms, and engineering behavior of SMAs to applications, manufacturing, characterization, thermomechanical constitutive modeling, computational structural analysis, design optimization, fracture, actuation fatigue, and magnetic SMAs. Particular emphasis is placed on translating SMA material behavior into engineering solutions, including morphing structures and solid-state actuators, while providing quantitative tools and methodologies to support both research and product development. By bringing together materials science, experimentation, computational mechanics, and design optimization in a single volume, the book offers students and researchers an entry point and engineers a practical reference for understanding, modeling, and exploiting the unique capabilities of SMAs.  Examples and homework problems further increase the book's utility as a teaching aid, helping readers develop an understanding of underlying theories, analysis approaches, and methods for modeling and designing SMA-based structures across diverse fields.

Dimitris C. Lagoudas, Ph.D., is Department Head of Aerospace Engineering, University Distinguished Professor, Regents Professor, and Robert C. “Bud” Hagner Chair of Engineering at Texas A&M University. Dimitris Lagoudas is recognized for pioneering contributions to design, characterization, and modeling of multifunctional materials, particularly shape memory alloys (SMAs) and phase-transforming materials. His work has advanced understanding of material behavior across multiple length scales and coupled physical phenomena.  He has authored or co-authored more than 600 scientific publications and one of the field’s most widely used books on SMAs. Computational models developed by his research group have been incorporated into leading finite element analysis software and are used by researchers, industry, and government laboratories worldwide. His honors include the ASME Adaptive Structures and Material Systems Prize, SPIE Smart Structures and Materials Lifetime Achievement Award, and SES Yonggang Huang Engineering Science Medal. He is a Fellow of AIAA, ASME, and SES, and holds honorary doctorates from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Greece, and Arts et Métiers, France. He was named University Distinguished Professor in 2013 and appointed Regents Professor of The Texas A&M University System in 2025.

Edwin A. Peraza Hernandez, Ph.D., has co-authored more than 60 peer-reviewed journal articles and conference papers on morphing structures and authored the textbook Active Origami: Modeling, Design, and Applications. His scholarly contributions have received multiple awards. He earned his Ph.D. and bachelor’s degrees in aerospace engineering from Texas A&M University. After serving as a faculty member in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at the University of California, Irvine, Dr. Hernandez now applies his expertise in industry, focusing on structural analysis and product development for renewable energy and electrified transportation. His research interests include active-material-based morphing structures, origami-inspired engineering structures, tensegrity systems, and structural strength and fatigue analysis of electrified vehicles.

Darren J. Hartl, Ph.D., received his Ph.D. in Aerospace Engineering in 2009. He was a contracted researcher in the area of SMA-driven solutions for The Boeing Company and later held joint appointments at the Air Force Research Laboratory (AFRL) in the Materials and Manufacturing Directorate and Aerospace Systems Directorate, focusing on adaptive structures. He returned to his alma mater as an Assistant Professor in 2016, achieving the rank of Full Professor in 2026. He has chaired or co-chaired 21 M.S. theses and 14 Ph.D. dissertations, and 10 graduate students have received national fellowships, many of them focused on SMAs. As a structures analysis and design educator, Dr. Hartl was granted a University Professorship for Undergraduate Teaching Excellence in 2024. His work bridges advanced multifunctional material systems, their analysis and design, and their integration into aerospace platforms. He has co-authored two textbooks and hundreds of technical articles, and has received four patents associated with active materials modeling, testing, design, and integration. In 2025, Dr. Hartl was named an Associate Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics.
