W.G. Lambert (1926-2011) war einer der führenden Assyriologen der zweiten Hälfte des 20. Jahrhunderts. Sein Vermächtnis besteht hauptsächlich aus einer großen Anzahl ausgezeichneter kritischer Editionen babylonischer Literatur. Viele der Texte, die er edierte, behandelten die Themen Religion und Mythologie. Man wird seiner immer als des Editors des babylonischen Hiob ( Ludlul bel nemeqi, auch bekannt als die Dichtung vom leidenden Gerechten), der babylonischen Sintflut-Erzählung ( Atra?asis) und des babylonischen Schöpfungs-Mythos ( Enuma eliš) gedenken. Der vorliegende Band versammelt dreiundzwanzig seiner Aufsätze zu diesen Themen, welche er zwischen 1958 und 2004 veröffentlichte. Diese haben nicht nur als das Vermächtnis eines ganz großen Gelehrten auf dem Gebiet der antiken mesopotamischen Religion und Mythologie Bestand, sondern auch weil ihre Aussagen von fortdauernder Gültigkeit und Wichtigkeit sind. Viele dieser Aufsätze sind Meilensteine auf ihrem Gebiet.
