At least since the time of Descartes, an inquiry into human self-consciousness is one of the major topics in philosophy. In the last decade, influenced by neuroscientific approaches, philosophers developed naturalistic theories of human subjectivity, with the aim to explain the constitution of human self-consciousness. This study compares these naturalistic theories (e.g. Antonio Damasio, Thomas Metzinger) with analytic approaches and with idealistic interpretations of self-consciousness. Drawing on the work of Robert Nozick and Johann Gottlieb Fichte, the author argues that human self-consciousness cannot be explained in naturalistic terms. Instead, it is a spontaneous phenomenon. Finally, the authors present an original performative interpretation of self-consciousness.>
