Quality Management in Engineering: A Scientific Processes and Systematic Approach for the Automotive Industry, Second Edition, builds upon the first edition’s strong foundation in quality management while addressing two critical industry advancements: supplier quality management and perceived quality frameworks. It offers a comprehensive exploration of methodologies designed to meet modern challenges, ensuring both functional excellence and aesthetic appeal in product development. Enhanced with automotive case studies featuring electric vehicle and autonomous driving technologies, this edition provides practical, science-based approaches for implementing robust quality systems throughout the product lifecycle.

This new edition includes expanded coverage of supplier quality management, reflecting the evolution of suppliers from parts producers to design, software, and assembly partners. Case studies involving EV battery manufacturers and autonomous driving technologies illustrate these advancements. Additionally, this book introduces a science-based perceived quality (PQ) framework, addressing customers’ growing expectations for products that combine reliability, functionality, and aesthetic appeal. This framework includes methodologies for design analysis, prototype evaluation, and craftsmanship, supported by visual examples from global automotive models.

Written for engineering professionals, quality managers, and academics, the new edition is tailored to meet the needs of both original equipment manufacturers and suppliers. Industry practitioners will benefit from practical tools such as quality function deployment and fault tree analysis, while academics will find real-world applications of theoretical principles. Whether you’re working in the automotive industry or studying its best practices, this edition provides invaluable insights into modern quality management.

Dr. Jong S. Lim began his career in 1985 as a quality engineer at Hyundai Motor Company in Korea, focusing on manufacturing quality improvements for export models and resolving market quality issues in the United States. He earned his Ph.D. in Thermal Science from Duke University in 1991 under the supervision of Professor Adrian Bejan.

After completing his doctorate, Dr. Lim joined the Samsung Electronics R&D Center, where he developed
advanced thermal management systems for next-generation products. In 1997, he moved to Honda Motor North America as new model quality manager, contributing to the development and launch of major models such as the Civic, Odyssey, and MDX. He later served as senior quality director at Honda’s U.S. engine plant, overseeing quality innovation in powertrain manufacturing.

In 2008, Dr. Lim became vice president of Quality at Renault Samsung Motors in Korea. There, he led new platform development in collaboration with Renault and Nissan and established a field-driven quality management system that enabled the brand to achieve the No. 1 customer satisfaction ranking for ten consecutive years.

He subsequently joined the Geely Group in China as vice president of R&D Quality, leading new platform development in collaboration with Volvo for both Chinese and European markets. In recognition of his contributions to improving China’s automotive quality, he received the Best Foreign Expert Award from the Chinese government in 2016.

In 2019, Dr. Lim became senior director of Reliability Engineering at FAW Group, where he built the reliability architecture for FAW’s premium Hongqi models and next-generation electric vehicle platforms.

Dr. Lim currently serves as a professor at Zhejiang University and CEO of QEMTechnologies, a global consulting firm specializing in quality, reliability, and innovation. He teaches industrial quality engineering and management
programs and advises manufacturing companies worldwide. He is also the author of Quality Management in Engineering (Taylor & Francis Group, 2019).
