China’s rural built environment is shaped not only by planning and governance, but also by the everyday decisions of families and residents. This book examines how individual agency continually adapts rural space within broader institutional and physical constraints.

Building on the seven-level analytical framework integrating urban morphology and Open Building theory developed across this two-volume study, Volume II focuses on four micro-spatial levels: neighborhood, building cluster, individual structure, and infill. Through an in-depth study of Xiaqiao Village in southern Zhejiang, it traces transformations in housing types, construction systems, interior configurations, and everyday spatial practices.

The book reveals rural transformation as an ongoing negotiation between top-down regulation and bottom-up adaptation. It offers a multi-level perspective on the relationships among governance, architecture, and everyday life, with implications for rural studies, architectural research, heritage conservation, planning, and rural regeneration.
