Originally published in 1964, this collection of writings and speeches by some of the most significant African leaders and activists of the 20th century concentrates on South and East Africa. It discusses the basic struggle for African freedom and the possibilities of an eventual United States of Africa.

Chief Albert Luthuli, together with the other contributors (Kenneth Kaunda, D. K. Chisiza, Tom Mboya and Julius K. Nyerere) brings both moral authority and lived experience to the examination of Africa's journey toward independence. The writing reflects the profound conviction that freedom is not merely a political aspiration but a fundamental human right. Through eloquent prose and passionate argument, the authors articulate the aspirations of millions of Africans who sought to reclaim their dignity, their land, and their future from colonial powers.

The book explores the complex dynamics of resistance movements across the continent, examining how diverse peoples united around common goals despite their varied cultures, languages, and historical experiences. Luthuli's perspective is particularly valuable because he witnessed firsthand the brutal realities of apartheid in South Africa while maintaining an unwavering commitment to nonviolent resistance—a stance that would earn him international recognition and the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960.

Africa's Freedom is not simply a historical account; it is a philosophical meditation on the meaning of liberty, justice, and human equality. T-he contributors challenge readers to understand that Africa's struggle was never about replacing one form of domination with another, but about establishing societies built on democratic principles, respect for human rights, and economic transformation.

The book shows clearly how, despite the regional diversity, Africans were united by similar aims, not just to be free from foreign domination, but also united in an emerging positive aspiration, to re-establish in a modern setting the roots of African life so that the continent could make its own contribution to the world.

For students of African history, civil rights movements, and postcolonial studies, Africa's Freedom remains essential reading.

Albert Luthuli (1898-1967) was the first African to win the Nobel Peace Prize in 1960 for spearheading the fight against apartheid. At the time of his death he was the leader of the then-banned African National Congress (ANC). In April 2025 South Africa's National Prosecuting Authority reopened fresh investigations into Luthuli’s death and in October 2025 a reopened inquest found that evidence presented did not support the original 1967 inquest findings and concluded that Luthuli’s death was attributable to assault by members of the security special branch of the South African police.
