This book focuses on Quantum True Random Number Generators (QTRNGs), presenting a comprehensive and critical treatment of randomness generation and the certification of quantumness. A central objective is to address the widespread misconception that passing classical statistical randomness tests is sufficient to certify the quantum nature of a random number generator. The primary purpose of the book is to establish a rigorous framework for evaluating and certifying QRNGs. A central goal is to correct the misconception that standard statistical tests are sufficient to prove a device is ‘quantum’. The authors demonstrate that classical PRNGs and quantum sources often produce statistically indistinguishable outputs, meaning standard tests cannot certify the source of randomness, only its quality. Dr. Arpita Maitra, Associate Professor, currently works in TCG CREST, Kolkata. Her expertise is in the domain of Quantum Computation and Communication. She completed graduation and post-graduation in Physics from Calcutta University and was awarded the Ph.D. degree from Computer Science & Engineering Department at Jadavpur University. She had an association with Indian Statistical Institute, Kolkata during her PhD program and qualified the JRF test too. After Ph.D., Arpita completed four years of Postdoctoral work in IIM Calcutta and IIT Kharagpur. Then she joined as an Assistant Professor at C. R. Rao Advanced Institute of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science (CRR AIMSCS), University of Hyderabad Campus. She taught courses related to Security, Cryptology and Quantum Information in IIM, IIT, and CRR AIMSCS. She has authored more than 25 papers in reputed journals and conferences in the broad area of Quantum Secure Communication. She is also involved with several projects in this domain.

Rajesh Kumar is an engineer and researcher specializing in quantum technologies, advanced defence systems, and secure communication. He holds a B.Tech. in Electronics & Communication Engineering from the National Institute of Technology (NIT) Patna and an M.Tech. in Quantum Technology from the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT), Pune. Rajesh has contributed extensively to the Programme Air Defence initiative, where he worked on seeker development and system-level integration. His research includes the design and statistical validation of multiple Quantum Random Number Generator (QRNG) systems—such as branching-path, time-of-arrival, and phase-noise–based architectures. His experience spans implementing timing-synchronization algorithms on MPSoC FPGA platforms for Quantum Key Distribution (QKD) and conducting security evaluations of QKD systems.

Dr. Saibal Kumar Pal  is working as Scientist ‘H’ & Director at Defence Research & Development Organization (DRDO), Delhi. Prior to this assignment, he has contributed as Technology Director at SAG and CISO of DRDO. Dr. Pal completed Post-graduation in Computer Science from University of Allahabad & PhD from University of Delhi in the area of Information Security. He also holds a doctoral degree in Brand Management. Dr. Pal has co-authored 7 books, 3 patents & has more than 300 peer-reviewed research publications. Dr. Pal has contributed in a number of significant R&D projects as the Project Director and international collaborations as Co-investigator. He is a member of national scientific & technical committees and has represented DRDO in many important forums. Dr. Pal is a recipient of Lab Scientist Award and DRDO Scientist of the Year Award.
