In recent years there have been many significant advances in smart technologies. To assess this progress, to promote new concepts, and to aid the transfer of technologies from the laboratory to the marketplace, a unique conference was held in December 2001in Edinburgh, Scotland. Smart Technology Demonstrators and Devices 2001, a cross-platform CD-ROM, presents the proceedings of this conference with full search facilities and amateur video footage of some exciting applications. Sponsored by the Army Research Laboratory's European Research Office, the European Office for Aerospace Research and Development, the Office of Naval Research's International Field Office, the Federal Aviation Administration, the Institution of Mechanical Engineers, and the Royal Aeronautical Society, the conference covered novel engineering structures and materials, MEMS, nanoscale systems, biomimetics, smart/intelligent composites, smart sensors, ER/MR fluids, polymers and polymeric gels, adaptive materials, vibration and sound control, and intelligent signal processing.
