King Ludwig I of Bavaria (r. 1825 – 1848) had the Walhalla built near Regensburg as a German national monument. The architect Leo von Klenze constructed the massive Neoclassical temple building based on the Parthenon in Athens between 1830 and 1842. On the eve of the Wars of Liberation the Walhalla was conceived as a memorial site commemorating distinguished German-speaking men and women and invoking the cultural nation of Germany to which they belonged.
