'Abolition of the family!' This controversial proposal by Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels has recently been revived by feminist writers, who analyse the family as a key institution of privatized social reproduction and discuss alternatives to this system. Building on these analyses, the volume’s contributors explore the connections between space, the economy, and care. They respond from an interdisciplinary perspective to a twofold question: How are reproductive regimes shaped by space, and vice versa? And how can interventions at the level of space—whether literal architecture, everyday spatial practices, or imagined spaces in art and literature— help reform, revolutionize or abolish these regimes and enable other forms of relating?

Melcher Ruhkopf ist Kulturwissenschaftler und forscht am Fachgebiet Kunst und Wissen der Universität Kassel zu Fragen des Ausstellens, die er mit kritischen Perspektiven auf Logistik und Infrastruktur verbindet. Zuvor war er Doktorand am DFG-Graduiertenkolleg »Kulturen der Kritik« an der Leuphana Universität Lüneburg sowie Stipendiat der Claussen-Simon-Stiftung im Projekt »Participatory Art Based Research«. Seine Dissertation wurde mit dem Förderpreis Maritimes Kulturerbe des Deutschen Schifffahrtsmuseums/Leibniz-Institut für Maritime Geschichte ausgezeichnet.

Mattutat, Liza
Liza Mattutat (Dr.) is a philosopher and writer specializing in feminist perspectives on law and social reproduction. Her current research focuses on historical utopias of care. From 2016 to 2026, she was a researcher and lecturer at Leuphana University Lüneburg, most recently as a postdoctoral researcher in the DFG-funded Research Training Group “Cultures of Critique.”
