Questo studio propone una rivalutazione della retorica di Gorgia. Egli è stato accusato di praticare e di insegnare una retorica di 'ciò che non è', una retorica paradossale che mira non alla verità e alla oggettività, ma alla falsità e all'inganno. La rivalutazione si fonda principalmente sul concetto di elkos, inteso come quella funzione dell'argomentazione retorica (pidtis) in grado di persuadere con mezzi razionali e avente come suo ogetto la yudls delle cose.
Il Capitolo I dà una raffigurazione complessiva del pensiero di Gorgia, arguendo che egli occupa una posizione intermedia tra nominalismo e realismo relativistico e tra sensismo e intellettualismo. I Capitoli II e III considerano le basi teoretiche della sua retorica: il secondo nella sezione gnoseologica e il terzo in quella linguistico-comunicativa del peri tou mh ontns. I Capitoli IV e V sono dedicati rispettivamente al peri tou mh ontns e alla Apologia di Palamede. Per entrambe le opere si tenta di dare una lettura unificata degli aspetti filosofici e retorici. Il Capitolo VI, infine, delinea un confronto tra Gorgia ed Euripide come intellettuali d'avanguardia ed educatori del loro tempo, avanzando l'ipotesi che almeno quattro delle cinque cause addotte da Gorgia a difesa di Elena nel suo Encomio dipendano dalle Troiane di Euripide, mentre la quinta potrebbe dipendere dall'Elena di quest'ultimo e potrebbe spiegarne anche il titolo.
Il libro si conclude con l'osservazione che il Gorgia 'storico', quello che emerge dall'analisi delle sue opere e da alcuni dei suoi frammenti piu importanti, non sembra un sofista particolarmente impegnato ad ingannarci con la stravaganza delle sue tesi, ma, al contrario, piuttosto intento a fare della stravaganza e del paradosso degli strumenti di critica razionale e di avanzamento intellettuale.

This study proposes a revaluation of the rhetoric of Gorgias. He has been accused of developing a rhetoric of 'what is not', a rhetoric which aims not at truth but at falsity. The revaluation gives full weight to the central conception of tò eikós and contends that Gorgias' rhetoric is in principle rationally grounded in 'the nature of things'.
Chapter I sets Gorgias against his background, arguing that he occupies a position between nominalism and realism, and between sensationalism and intellectualism. Chapters II and III consider the theoretical bases of his rhetoric, first in the epistemological section and then in the linguistic section of On What is Not. Chapters IV and V, taking their start from On What is Not and also from the Defence of Palamedes, attempt to unify the rhetorical and the philosophical aspects of the two essays. Finally, Chapter VI suggests that four of the five causes canvassed in the Encomium to Helen depend on Euripides' Trojan Woman, while the fifth relies on his Helen (and thus explains Gorgias' title).
This work intends to detect in Gorgias all those rational elements rotating on the function of the verisimilar, in order to determine more precisely both the constitution of his rhetoric and his position as an intellectual in the forefront in the culture of his time.
