The new Criminal Practice Directions have been wholly revised in line with changes to the law and to best practice with some additional directions added. The Practice Directions have also been re-structured to integrate with, and complement, the corresponding Parts of the Criminal Procedure Rules.
Of particular practical importance are the new directions in relation to:
- The treatment of vulnerable witnesses and accused
- Investigation orders and warrants, complementing the new Rules at Part 6
- Reporting restrictions, amended so as to refer to all reporting restrictions, not just those under section 4(2) of the Contempt of Court Act 1981, and
- drawing on the recent judgment in R (Press Association) v Cambridge Crown Court [2012] EWCA Crim 2434
- Jurors, revised and extended to include further detail about directing the jury, in particular in relation to the internet
- Victim personal statements, families bereaved in consequence of crime and community impact statements, revised to take account of the judgment in R v Perkins [2013] EWCA Crim 323
There has been also extensive updating of other sections in the light of the 2013 authorities up to the 28th October 2013.
