The year 2014 marked the bicentenary of the publication of Friedrich Carl von Savigny’s “Vom Beruf unsrer Zeit für Gesetzgebung und Rechtswissenschaft”. Even in the mid-19th century, many legal scholars outside of Germany spoke of the “renowned Savigny” on account of this pamphlet. Much more importantly, Savigny opened up a fundamental debate that continues today over the definition and emergence of law and the role and self-perception of jurisprudence. The present anthology comprises legal historical contributions on the global reception of Savigny’s pamphlet and legal theoretical observations on the integrability of his thoughts on the pluralism of legal sources in the present age of state deregulation and the transnationalisation of law.
