Diagenesis: Subsurface Processes in Sediments and Sedimentary Rocks examines the chemical and mechanical processes that affect sediment after deposition, which are responsible for the rock properties that we observe in the subsurface. Predicting subsurface rock properties is essential for effective understanding of subsurface systems for a wide range of purposes. The text begins with a detailed review of the nature of diagenesis and its key controls. Then starting materials are examined with detrital grain assemblages. Several chapters explore the mechanical and chemical processes of diagenesis. Finally, the authors analyze the behavior of key mineral and rock components in diagenesis, the many applications of diagenetic concepts, and the role of diagenesis in the rock cycle. Readers will also appreciate additional learning resources for understanding petrographic methods. This invaluable reference offers readers a comprehensive, in-depth understanding of diagenesis and its important applications.

Marsaglia, Kathleen M.
Kathleen M. Marsaglia received degrees in Geology from the University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana (B.S. – 1979; M.S. – 1982) and UCLA (PhD - 1989). She is a Professor of Geology at California State University Northridge (CSUN; 2000-Present), and also taught at UT El Paso (1989-1996). She is a sedimentologist with expertise in sandstone petrology, marine geology and sedimentation and tectonics with several years of petroleum industry experience. She is a Fellow of the Geological Society of America, was an AAPG Distinguished Lecturer, served on the American Chemical Society Petroleum Research Fund Advisory Board (2017 to 2022), and received the Distinguished Educator Award from AAPG, and Outstanding Faculty Award from CSUN. She has been a member of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP) U.S. Advisory Committee, and now serves as Science Co-Chair of the IODP Science Evaluation Panel. She has authored over 140 scientific publications and transferred sedimentological expertise gained on numerous scientific cruises into four IODP Technical Notes (books) on core description. She is ending a 4-year term as Co-editor of the Journal of Sedimentary Research.

Milliken, Kitty L.
Kitty L. Milliken received a B.A. in geology (1975) from Vanderbilt University and M.A. (1977) and Ph.D. (1985) degrees from the University of Texas at Austin. She is currently appointed as a Research Professor at the Bureau of Economic Geology in the Jackson School of Geosciences, University of Texas at Austin. Her career has focused on the integration of petrographic and geochemical methods to observe and interpret the evolution of sedimentary rock properties in the subsurface. She has authored and co-authored around 120 peer-reviewed papers as well as digital resources for teaching sedimentary petrography. She served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Sedimentary Research (1993-2000), as JSR Co-Editor (2004-2008), and as President of SEPM (2014-2015). She was elected a Fellow of the Geological Society of America (2008) and received Honorary Membership in SEPM (2021). Her awards include the Powers Medal of the American Association Petroleum Geologists (2023), the Doris Malkin Curtis Medal of the Gulf Coast Section of SEPM (2023), and the Pettijohn Medal of SEPM (2024).

Sutton, Sally J.
Sally J. Sutton received a B.S. in Geology and Mineralogy from the University of Michigan in 1979 and a Ph.D. from the University of Cincinnati in 1987. She worked at the University of Texas at Austin as a research associate before joining the faculty of Colorado State University (CSU) in 1992. Since 2022 she has been emeritus. Her research interests have focused on alteration processes in clastic sedimentary rocks, whether through deep basinal diagenetic processes, exposure to mineralizing fluids, or interaction with groundwater. She has collaborated extensively with researchers in the petroleum, mining, and groundwater extraction industries. Additionally, she has taught an array of undergraduate and graduate courses, centered on sedimentary petrology and geochemistry. She has taught her graduate students have applied petrologic and geochemical tools, including modeling, to understanding of the sedimentary subsurface. In addition to research and teaching, she has served in numerous administrative roles at CSU.
