This book presents the official proceedings of the Ninth National Conference on Systems Science, hosted by the Italian Systems Society (AIRS) and the University of Parma in May 2026. Bringing together leading voices from across disciplines—architecture, biology, economics, education, philosophy, physics, and beyond—this book explores the landscape of systemic properties in complex systems.

Centered on the theme of emergent systemic properties, the contributions investigate how such properties are acquired, avoided, detected, induced, maintained, and managed. From theoretical frameworks to applied models, the proceedings offer interdisciplinary insights into the behavior of systems that evolve, adapt, and self-organize. Topics range from collective behavior and ecosystems to cybernetics, constructivism, and resilience. With contributions selected through single-blinded peer review, this book serves as a vital resource for researchers, practitioners, and students interested in systemics.

Gianfranco Minati is the founder and the president of the Italian Systems Society (AIRS) and a member of the scientific committee of Conferences and Systems Societies. From 2000 to 2017, he was a doctoral lecturer at the Polytechnic of Milan, Italy. His current research interest focuses on the artificial unconscious in AI, complex systems, dynamic usage of models (DYSAM), emergence, logical openness, mesoscopic coherence, meta-structures, multiple systems, quasi-systems, theoretical incompleteness, architecture, and design as social meta-structures to influence processes of emergence in social systems. He is the author and editor of various monographs and contributed volumes, most recently Multiple Systems (Springer, 2023), and co-edits the book series Contemporary Systems Thinking (CST).

Dolores Rollo is an Associate Professor of Developmental and Educational Psychology in the Neuroscience Unit of the Department of Medicine and Surgery at the University of Parma. She serves as the Rector’s Delegate for Inclusion and Psychological Counseling and is the Director of the Welcome and Inclusion Center. She teaches Developmental and Educational Psychology in the Bachelor’s Degree programs in Psychological Sciences and Techniques for Contemporary Challenges, Professional Education, and Neuro and Psychomotor Therapy of Developmental Age. She also teaches Cognitive and Affective Developmental Neuroscience in the Master’s Degree program in Psychobiology and Cognitive Neuroscience. In addition to being a member of AIRS, she is a full member of the Italian Association of Psychology (AIP) and the Italian Association for Research and Intervention in Learning Psychopathology (AIRIPA).
