This book explores recent developments in both theoretical and experimental quantum many-body systems of ultracold atoms, highlighting their competing interactions—both repulsive and attractive, as well as short- and long-range. Over the past decade, these systems have become a leading platform for quantum simulation, revealing new exotic quantum phases of matter and intriguing nonequilibrium phenomena.

Featuring contributions from well-known international researchers in the field, the book covers various cold-atom platforms, focusing on significant discoveries in many-body physics, such as unique states of matter, hydrodynamic instabilities, quantum turbulence, and supersolid states. It also discusses the practical applications of these systems in quantum information processing, entangled state engineering, and general quantum simulation.

Designed to summarize the latest advancements, this book offers numerous examples and applications of quantum many-body dynamics and nonlinear wave phenomena. It aims to help young researchers get up to speed with recent advancements and explore ways to overcome current challenges, enhancing our understanding of quantum fluctuations and competing nonlinearities in nonequilibrium quantum many-body dynamics.

Simeon I. Mistakidis is an Assistant professor at the Department of Physics Missouri S&T, where he leads the Quantum many-body dynamics and technologies group. His research spans nonequilibrium quantum dynamics, quasiparticle physics, ultracold chemistry, quantum entanglement, exotic phases of matter, and emerging quantum technologies. He was an ITAMP (Institute for Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics) Postdoctoral fellow at Harvard University, where he conducted research on the engineering of entanglement-based processes and magnetic phenomena appearing in many-body multicomponent atomic systems spanning quasiparticle physics and exotic phases of matter emerging in long-range interacting settings. He received his Ph.D. with distinction (summa cum laude) at the University of Hamburg (Centre for Optical Quantum Technologies), Germany, in the field of Atomic Molecular and Optical Physics with a research focus on the correlated nonequilibrium quantum dynamics of lattice trapped ultracold bosons and the physics of polarons. He was awarded a Ph.D Scholarship “Hamburgisches Gesetz zur Forderung des wissenschaftlichen und kunstlerischen Nachwuchses” and received the Lenz-Ising Award for outstanding junior scientists.

Chen-Lung Hung is Professor of Physics and Astronomy at Purdue University, with a courtesy appointment in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. He received his bachelor's degree from National Taiwan University in 2003 and his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 2011, both in physics. Before joining the Purdue faculty in 2015, he held a postdoctoral fellowship at the California Institute of Technology. His research ranges from many-body physics with atomic quantum gases to quantum optics with integrated atom-nanophotonics. He is a recipient of the AFOSR Young Investigator Award and the NSF CAREER Award, and was named a Gordon and Betty Moore Foundation Experimental Physics Investigator.

Panayotis G. Kevrekidis earned his B.Sc. Degree from the Department of Physics of the University of Athens in 1996. He subsequently joined the Physics Department of Rutgers University from where he earned  a Ph.D. (2000) in Physics.  He then assumed a postdoctoral research post for a year split between the Program in Applied and Computational Mathematics of Princeton University (10/2000-02/2001) and the Theoretical Division and the Centre for Nonlinear Studies of the Los Alamos National Laboratory (03/2001-08/2001). From September 2001, he joined the Faculty ranks of the Department of Mathematics and Statistics of the University of Massachusetts (UMass), Amherst, as an assistant professor. Presently, he is a Distinguished University Professor at UMass, Amherst.
