This edited volume is a how-to guide for those involved in responding to emerging and evolving diseases anywhere in the world. It provides a strategy to conduct a comprehensive investigation of such diseases. It then provides guidance and detailed information on how to use each of the different methods which may be needed to detect, describe and identify the nature of the disease, from genomics to spatio-temporal epidemiology and artificial intelligence, and all methods in between. It also describes how to investigate different populations – human, domestic animal and wildlife - and how to assess climate effects and economic consequences of a disease. The final part shows how to implement the investigation at local, national or regional level, and how to involve stakeholders in the process.

A large scientific literature on epidemic and pandemic diseases has been produced during and after the events, describing lessons learned. In contrast, this book is intended to be in the hands of investigators and decision makers in advance, so that they can respond effectively to signs of an incipient epidemic/pandemic. Readers will improve their understanding of disease development under changing climatic and environmental conditions. Pandemic preparedness in a country can be improved through training using the investigation road map provided for the imaginary “Mysteria” outbreak.

is edited by a renowned epidemiologist and health economist who has spent over 50 years investigating diseases worldwide. There are 41 contributing authors to the sixteen chapters from all regions of the world. Authors from Asia and Africa ensure that the descriptions of practical approaches meet the needs of the areas most at risk for disease emergence.
