This book discusses border towns in the context of increased cross-border migration, urbanisation, regional development, and integration in Africa. It explores the centrality of border towns in Africa and how they both implicate and are in turn impacted by cross-border trade and flows, cross-border (in)security, spatial transformation, development, and regional integration. Borders play a paradoxical yet generative role, simultaneously enabling and constraining the development trajectories of these towns. All this amplifies not only the importance but also the centrality of border towns in spatial transformation, development, and the socioeconomic, political, and cultural implications of their conviviality, despite their marginal geographical location.
